The video below captures one of our routine inspections using a High-Precision Video Measuring System (VMM), often referred to in the industry as an "Optical Comparator" or "2.5D Image Measuring Instrument."
While traditional manual calipers are useful for rough measurements, they apply pressure to the part, which can slightly deform soft plastic components and lead to inaccurate readings. The VMM solves this by using non-contact optical technology.
How It Works: Precision at the Micron Level
As you can see in the footage, a pink injection-molded component (a lip gloss insert) is placed on the stage. Here is the process happening in real-time:

Optical Magnification: A high-resolution CCD camera magnifies the component by up to 100x, projecting the image onto the monitor.

Edge Detection: The machine uses backlighting to create a sharp silhouette. The software automatically detects the edges of the part (shown by the yellow crosshairs on the screen).

Data Calculation: It instantly calculates critical dimensions—Inner Diameter (ID), Outer Diameter (OD), Roundness, and Concentricity—with an accuracy of 0.001mm.
